Due to their intensive commercial exploitation, the Alps, one of the largest continuous natural areas in Europe, are experiencing the significant consequences of climate change. For over 25 years, the Alpine Convention has provided a binding framework agreement between all eight Alpine states for sustainable development. For instance, the Mountaineering Villages Initiative shows how to combine sustainable tourism, local value creation and quality of life in 17 regions. At the same time, there are pan-Alpine projects to collect data on the socio-ecological impact of climate change on winter tourism and to develop new perspectives.
