In April 2022, the renowned Kyiv Symphony Orchestra set out for their Western-Europe tour. Two months prior to that, Putin’s army had invaded Ukraine. Pretty soon, it was clear that the orchestra’s members would not be able to return to their home country. In the embattled capital city, performances would be unimaginable. Showcasing and defending Ukrainian culture in Europe—that is now the orchestra’s mission. What started as a journey, has now become exile. It was a series of coincidences that led the symphony orchestra to Gera in the German federal state of Thuringia. There, the city provides housing and a rehearsal room for them. A relief for the musicians. From Gera, they travel to the most significant European concert halls and celebrate their success. But in May 2023, Kyiv cuts the funding. The orchestra faces possible dissolution. For the male musicians, a return to the Ukraine would mean that they might be conscripted to serve in the war.
In a moving radio documentary, Franziska Sophie Dorau tells about the steadfast strength and passion of an orchestra fighting for its music—against all the odds.
