A weekend with a view

Look closely at what is happening.
Ilse Aichinger

Program

For three days, journalists will meet other knowledgeable mediators of information from different regions of the world in Innsbruck. In conversations with colleagues and other experts, visitors find out what is going on behind the scenes of the information on international events, which is often hastily and superficially conveyed, and can contribute.

Current social, political and cultural developments are the focus of the debates, from book presentations, exhibitions, doc-films and audio features. The Journalismusfest Innsbruck opens a window to the complex present in which we live.

Scrutinising Austrian Media Policy

For years, government advertising was an efficient way of securing favourable political coverage and a funding instrument for media outlets: not an ideal setup for independent coverage, so important for democracy, and the oversight function of journalism. At the same time, the digital transformation has placed publishers under unprecedented strain. Advertisement revenue is flowing to digital platforms. Media Minister Andreas Babler wants to introduce new media funding to strengthen independent journalism. Quality standards and ethical principles are supposed to play a key role for that. How viable is this reform?
