Both journalism and humanitarian aid in the autonomous Palestinian territories face intense pressure from the Israeli government. According to Reporters Without Borders, last year, at least 29 journalists were killed in the Gaza Strip, making it the deadliest place worldwide for journalists. Doctors Without Borders’ (MSF) humanitarian aid is blocked too: had it been up to the Israeli government, the organisation would have ceased its support efforts in the Gaza Strip and in the West Bank as of March 1, 2026; a last-minute injunction issued by the Supreme Court temporarily suspended the order. Until October 2025, journalist Malak Tantish lived in Gaza and reported from there; as MSF Head of Operations, Marcus Bachmann led negotiations with the Israeli government.
