Christian Schicklgruber combined his PhD at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology with the study programme Tibetology and Buddhist Studies at the University of Vienna. He carried out extensive field studies among Tibetan-speaking communities in the Himalayan countries and authored numerous publications on the topics social system and the syncretism of pre-Buddhist religious notions with the monastic Buddhism. He also made a substantial contribution to several documentaries on behalf of Austrian public-service broadcaster ORF.
In 1995, he assumed the position as curator for South Asia, South-East Asia and Himalayan countries at the Weltmuseum in Vienna. Currently he has the role of deputy director. His most significant exhibitions include “Bhutan—Fortress of the Gods”, “Vietnam—Gods, Heroes, Ancestors”, “Naga—Jewellery and Ashes”. “The Tower of Tromngsa“ and “Nepal Art Now“.
