Marija Aljochina is a Russian conceptual artist, political activist and member of the artist collective Pussy Riot. Along with her fellow campaigners Nadya Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich, they attracted worldwide attention with an anti-Putin performance in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in 2012. Their punk prayer “Mother of God, Drive Putin Away”, a dire warning against Russian authoritarianism, led to the activists’ arrest and imprisonment. Thanks to an amnesty bill, they were liberated after two years. Together with Tolokonnikova, Aljochina went on to found an NGO for prisoners’ rights. As the war against Ukraine started and the Russian opposition was silenced, she and her allies kept protesting. To avoid a renewed prison sentence, Marija Aljochina fled Russia in 2022 – disguised as a food delivery driver. Her new book “Political Girl” is the political biography of one of the most important Russian dissidents.
