Mattea Fo

Mattea Fo has been director of Dario Fo and Franca Rame Foundation since 2019. Mattea Fo studied Art and Humanities; and since 2011, she has been collaborating closely with her grandparents, playwright and director Dario Fo and playwright and actress Franca Rame. Both of them used to be engaged in political and social issues. The foundation was established in their honour, in order to promote cultural initiatives. In Umbria, on the premises of the Libera Repubblica di Alcatraz (Free Republic of Alcatraz), between Perugia, Gubbio, and Assisi, the foundation now offers a respite for persecuted journalists. Mattea’s father, author and cartoonist Jacopo Fo, founded the Libera Repubblica di Alcatraz in 1982, after acquiring an abandoned house. The initiative launched by his daughter Mattea Fo was named „Rifugio A 231“ (refuge, sanctuary, safe haven, but also hut) after a protected bird species, the blue roller (Coracias garrulus) which was assigned the species code A 231: “A true migratory bird”. Mexican investigative journalist Marcela Turati is the first journalist and guest in Alcatraz in 2025.
