Media have been under critical scrutiny since their inception, not just since the rise of social media. You can trace an arc, from Socrates passing through Karl Kraus’ Die Fackel and Theodor W. Adorno, straight to today. In recent decades, voices critical of the media have grown louder once again. Media-critical stances and statements are exerting a growing influence on societal discourse and journalistic practice itself. What is the role of media criticism in society? In his new book, Innsbruck-based scholar of German literature Dirk Rose explores this question. He will discuss this topic with Media Scholar Volker Lilienthal, who has long held the Rudolf Augstein Foundation Professorship for the Practice of Quality Journalism.
