For a long time, gender-specific aspects of disease were overlooked in medical research and education — including in Austria. Due to differing symptoms certain conditions were often identified later in women, but also in men, which resulted in poorer treatment results. The healthcare system still fails to properly consider the needs of people with disabilities, and medical students receive limited training on this topic. Also concerns of migrants need to be adequately addressed in healthcare. Furthermore, it is important to ask what age-appropriate medicine would look like.
Together with the Institute for Diversity in Medicine the Medical University of Innsbruck set out to conduct research on gender differences as well as other diversity aspects in healthcare, prevention, pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapy and to impart this knowledge on diversity-related topics in medicine. Our Bodies is a feminist health magazine and a rare example of media raising awareness for gender-specific issues among the general public.
