This panel is dedicated to the significance of initiatives that provide protection to persecuted and endangered journalists. It will shed light upon the question why it is essential that the media and the public report about this persecution to keep journalists safe and exert pressure on an international level. Marcela Turati, a renowned journalist from Mexico standing up for the protection of journalists will share her experiences. She is travelling from Umbria, where she currently lives—upon the invitation of Mattea Fo, director of the Dario Fo and Franca Rame Foundation. This foundation, established in remembrance of the two major Italian authors, now funds endangered journalists to spend a longer respite in its Libera Università di Alcatraz—a true “rifugio” (refuge). In collaboration with Reporters Without Borders, German taz Panter Foundation too offers a “scholarship for a refuge respite”. Since 2015, every year, two journalists from countries with restricted press and information freedom have been invited to come to Berlin.
