Serious allegations of gigantic manipulation of the presidential elections in November 2024 in favour of the far-right candidate Călin Georgescu by a Russian network of fake accounts were initially described by the Chinese online company TikTok as “misleading and false”. Only once the EU took initiated proceedings against TikTok under the EU Digital Service Act, the corporation deemed it necessary to take the reports by intelligence services seriously. TikTok confirmed the allegations of disinformation. Romania’s foreign intelligence service describes it as “aggressive hybrid Russian actions” The Supreme Court barred Georgescu from the runoff elections. What is at stake for Romania? How can independent media survive?
