At the time this programme went to press, it was still not clear whether Viktor Orbán, whose Fidesz party has governed continuously for the past 16 years, had remained in power or whether Hungary had a chance of democratisation and greater media pluralism. Orbán has secured major influence over the media landscape through political control of the state broadcaster and a government-steered media regulation body. Moreover, under the umbrella of the KESMA Foundation, a Fidesz ally, a massive conglomerate of hundreds of media outlets was formed. Only a few independent outlets have persevered.
In neighbouring Slovakia, left-wing nationalist Robert Fico, who had been excluded from the Party of European Socialists, has created a hostile climate for independent journalism since returning to power in 2023. The government openly targets media outlets critical of the government. Editorial offices are attacked with SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation).
Journalists and publishers from both countries will engage in conversation.
