15 months after Donald Trump returned to power in the US, the country is scarcely recognisable. Trump has signed orders withdrawing the US from the Paris Climate Agreement, the WHO and the UN Human Rights Council; he has dismantled the agency for international development, USAID, and still harbours plans to annex Greenland. In the Middle East, Trump started a war alongside Israel, with the consequences for the region and the economy still remaining to be seen. Silicon Valley’s tech billionaires are thanking Trump for his welfare-slashing policies with huge investments, harnessing the now more accessible natural resources specifically for the massive development of AI servers. The Trump government targets independent media outlets. Since summer 2025, a nationwide civil-society (“No Kings”) protest movement has mobilised against Trump. Drawing over eight million participants, the protests at the end of March 2026 were the largest single-day mass protest in the history of the US.
