“We draw hope from action, the act of doing – and the belief that spring will always follow winter”, says contemporary historian Mirjam Zadoff, raised in Tyrol and now Director of the Munich Nazi Documentation Centre. Russia’s war of aggression, the fracturing of the western alliance, electoral victories for right-wing extremists in Europe, wars in the Middle East, the climate crisis: in a new volume of essays, Zadoff suggests ways that we can resist despair in difficult times and instead uncover optimism in everyday life. She calls for us to “join forces”, focusing on “the change we can achieve as a collective”.
