A weekend with a view

Look closely at what is happening.
Ilse Aichinger

Program 2023

For three days, journalists will meet with other knowledgeable mediators of information from different regions of the world in Innsbruck.

In discussions with colleagues and other experts, visitors learn what goes on behind the scenes of the often hastily and superficially conveyed information on international events and can contribute. Current social, political and cultural developments are the focus of the debates, book presentations, exhibitions, documentary films and audio features.

The Journalismusfest Innsbruck (Innsbruck Journalism Festival – International Information Days) opens a window to the complex present in which we live.

In 2023, we welcome more than 120 contributors from 20 countries and three continents to about 50 events in the heart of Innsbruck. The venues are easy to reach on foot or by bike.

Untold. Theater in Pictures.
Photographs by Monika Rittershaus.

24 women from operas by Richard Wagner, each in her own cosmos, encounter “lost profiles” from different stage narratives. A photograph can reveal a tiny section from a stage event that the eye may not perceive. Moments in between. Moments of silence. Fragments. In the compilation, the images get in contact with each other. They enter into a dialogue. Reassembled, subjective storyboards emerge from the images.

Standing up for press freedom - from Solidarność to today
In conversation with Adam Michnik

Essayist and publicist Adam Michnik is one of Eastern Europe’s most enigmatic intellectuals: As a student, Michnik was one of the activists of Poland’s 1968 movement, co-founder of the Committee for the Defense of Workers KOR in 1976, editor of underground magazines, leading advisor to the Solidarność trade union and founder of Gazeta Wyborcza, the first independent daily newspaper in Eastern Europe even before the fall of the Iron Curtain. To this day, Michnik is editor-in-chief of Poland’s largest liberal newspaper, fighting daily together with the editorial staff for the rule of law and democracy in Poland. His dialogues with Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, published as a book in 2015, were widely echoed in Eastern Europe.
Nina Horaczek talks with Adam Michnik and Gazeta Wyborcza Deputy Editor-in-Chief Bartosz Wieliński about the paper’s ongoing commitment to press freedom, Russia’s war in Ukraine, threats to democracy in Poland, and its relationship with the EU.

How is the Euregio doing? - L'Euregio come sta?
A look from the perspective of the major regional media

Awareness of the Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino Euroregion has increased significantly over the past ten years among the population of all three countries. The activities of the Euregio are now perceived in all three countries, but least of all by young people under 25. Are the initiatives of the European Region sufficiently communicated to the public? For the first time, representatives of six major regional media from Trentino, South Tyrol and Tyrol are invited to critically and self-critically reflect on the public perception of the Euregio and the reporting.

Armenia - forgotten and threatened

Since the end of 2022, Azerbaijan has been holding Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed region under international law inhabited by Armenians, under a blockade. Food, medicine and fuel are in short supply, and the European Union has sent an observer mission to the border area. The three journalists talk about the blockade and the resulting humanitarian crisis, as well as about Azerbaijan’s threatening gestures and attacks against the Armenian population.

Atlas of Globalization. The world in maps and graphics

The planet is at its limits, new viruses are temporarily paralyzing entire countries, and the gap between rich and poor is widening. Le Monde diplomatique’s first atlas of globalization was published 20 years ago. It set standards in journalistic cartography. In over 200 novel charts, this is the first comprehensive and vivid presentation of what globalization means in the 21st century: for the mobility of people and goods, for political participation, social progress or worldwide communication from San Francisco to Kinshasa. Eight atlases and 20 years later, this small exhibition uses the current atlas of globalization “Unequal World” as an example to show various graphic forms in their latest state. The exhibition was created for the Journalismusfest 2023 as a cooperation project with Le Monde Diplomatique/ Berlin and will be distributed by Südwind.

The Nutella empire - research in the Ferrero company

Alba in Piedmont is a center of upscale Italian gastronomic culture, known for truffles and red wines. Alba is also the headquarters of what has become one of the largest confectionery companies in the world: Ferrero. The Ferrero story can be considered a paradigm for capitalism made in Italy. During World War II, when chocolate was hard to come by, confectioner Pietro Ferrero used hazelnuts from the Langhe region of Piedmont as a substitute for his chocolate cream. And soon after he filled a “supercrema” made of cocoa, hazelnuts, and coconut oil into jars, which son
Michele sweetly named “nutella.” Today, the raw materials for the mass product of the hazelnut empire come from all over the world: palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia, cocoa from West Africa and Ecuador, beet sugar from Europe and cane sugar from South America. And, of course, hazelnuts. The demand is gigantic, with the largest supplier being Turkey.
The biggest sales market for “nutella” is Germany.

The Human Trial - documentary about stem cell therapy
A debate about science and journalism

For seven years, U.S. filmmaker Lisa Hepner and her partner Guy Mossmann followed a clinical trial researching the cure for type 1 diabetes through stem cell therapy. The resulting feature-length documentary has won multiple international awards and made the shortlist for the 2023 Oscars. Hepner offers a very personal glimpse into the lives and feelings of both the researchers and two subjects who agreed to participate in the study for the sake of science as well as in the hope of finding a cure. Hepner found herself in an unfamiliar role as a type 1 diabetic and journalist.

Investigating Western firms' links to Russian military supply chains

In mid-2022, several media outlets and NGOs began publishing research showing that Russia’s state-owned energy company Gazprom had been supplied with gas from gas fields co-owned by major European energy companies. In this way, the exploitation of fossil fuels in Russia not only indirectly contributed to the financial support of the Russian war machine, but also supplied military jets with fuel. As a result of further publications in Le Monde, Der Spiegel and ZDF, the corporations announced that they were leaving their Russian joint ventures.

Cobalt from the Congo - exploitation for digitization. And the significance of local radios.

The rare and highly sought-after raw materials cobalt and coltan are mined in Congo under deplorable working conditions. Coltan is needed for laptops and smartphones, and without cobalt, there would be no lithium-ion batteries in e-cars. Anyone who talks about digitalization offensives or e-mobility cannot remain silent about the exploitation in Congo by international corporations from Switzerland or China, for example. Copper or gold from the Congo are also needed by the industry worldwide. In the Congo Basin, resources in the world’s second largest rainforest are also being fought over.
The courageous Coracon radio network in the eastern part of the country, where war is raging, is often considered the only reliable source of information there with its more than 60 local radio stations. The Munich-based association Journalists Help Journalists, founded during the wars in the former Yugoslavia, supports this work.

However, due to an internal incident in the prison, the editorial team was no longer allowed to work. In cooperation with editors and layout artists from the Berlin daily newspaper taz, theopportunity has now been created to relaunch Lichtblick with a series of workshops and to continue to give prisoners a voice. Feminist protest movement in Iran:
What's next?

In September 2022, the largest protest movement in the history of the Islamic Republic erupted: Shouting “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” – woman, life, freedom – thousands of people took to the country’s streets every day in support of fundamental rights. More than 500 people were killed and tens of thousands were imprisoned. Where does the protest movement stand eight months later? What is the role of European governments? And where do things go from here?

Public Service Media - an (in)dispensable orientation anchor?

The fact that more and more news is being sourced via social media poses new challenges for journalism. Nowadays, many people have the opportunity to provide information themselves and thereby draw attention to certain topics. They all potentially have an impact on our level of knowledge by deciding which news is picked up, how much we learn about an event and how often topics are reported. This process is called gatekeeping. But how do public media exist in the new gatekeeper diversity? How can the public added value for society be made (more) visible, especially for young people?  And what concrete measures have been and are being taken in Austria and in Europe?

Point of View - Information, image and journalistic storytelling

Information graphics and data visualization are becoming increasingly important for getting facts to the audience. But mere “visualization” is usually not enough. What makes infographics and data visualizations a narrative and explanatory medium? Sandra Rendgen deals with the history and present of visual knowledge transfer. Using hundreds of maps and information graphics from all eras and media, she examines the changes in methods, techniques, and forms of narration and demonstrates: In the enormous flow of information in our everyday lives and the boom in fake news, it is more important than ever that interdisciplinary expertise interacts to explain complex issues in a comprehensible way.

Blind Spots: Ukraine, Belarus, Russia

For far too long, Eastern European cultural areas have been perceived in Western Europe as a uniform space without major differences. But also in the mutual perception of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, there are many blind spots, the legacy of the colonial past. Together, we will try to track down and uncover these blind spots to get to know each other and possibly also gain a more differentiated understanding of the current crises.

The couple Dan and Lia Perjovschi, Sibiu, Romania, is one of the internationally renowned and influential artistic voices of Eastern Europe.
For more than 30 years, Dan Perjovschi has been commenting on current events and everyday life in an unmistakably reduced visual language, with a few lines. His drawings on Putin’s war in Ukraine were on display at the last Documenta Kassel 2022. As a journalist, he is also the editor of the Horizontale Zeitung.
Lia Perjovschi’s work consists of performances, actions, installations, drawings and text-based works. The lot of the galgos. Reports about animals

“India dropped out early” at the race. “Now she is needed for birthing,” writes reporter Barbara Bachmann. India is a Spanish greyhound. A galgo. Galgos are bred specifically for greyhound racing, a dog hunt for hares. In 2019, the Federación Española de Galgos counted nearly 12,500 sporting licenses for about 200,000 registered Galgos in the country; it’s estimated there are half a million greyhounds.
“Sandra loves arugula. And grapes. Sandra was born in Rostock, Germany, and moved to Buenos Aires when she was six years old. She is the most famous orangutan in the world. In 2014, a court in Argentina granted her the rights of a person for the first time. Bachmann has portrayed Sandra. And also Findus, a severely injured foundling fawn. The author raised it: “Can a human replace an animal’s mother?”. Reports about animals – an approach.

Pussy Riot. Riot Days. F*ck Putin

The unfiltered soundtrack of Russian criticism of Putin. As a member of Pussy Riot, Marija Alyokhina is considered an enemy of the state by the Kremlin. Disguised as a courier driver, she fled Russia at the beginning of the war to fight Putin in Europe with her punk band and to celebrate solidarity with Ukraine worldwide. A crossover of concert, rally and theater, spoken word and live music tells a story of resistance, repression and revolution. Art that meets political activism – captivating, inspiring and a vibrant testament to a different Russia.

Fight for Independence: Journalists from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine in conversation

In Russia, the regime has suppressed any remaining independent reporting. In March 2023, the respected internet medium Meduza was banned. The editorial team continues to report from Latvia, where Meduza originated in 2014. In exile in Warsaw sits NEXTA: The Belarusian platform, which provides information on various social media channels, was of great importance to the 2020 protests and is widely received in Eastern Europe. Independent media in Ukraine, like Zaborona, also need support. Zaborona collects reports on missing relatives and documents human rights violations during the war. And in Latvia, the Media Hub Riga has formed to support more than 500 media professionals from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. Thanks to the contacts of the taz Panter Foundation, Berlin, exponents of these media are coming to the Journalismusfest.

What do we live for? About the idea of researching deep questions of meaning journalistically

What do I live for? How do I get along? In the desire to find the deeper meaning in life, the search begins with oneself. It often leads to the realization that these questions are addressed to the community, there we want to find ourselves in the search for meaning, for a spirituality that sustains us together. This longing is huge.
The ZEIT publishing house strengthens content around the meaning of life, unusually, with its own sense editorial office. Two journalists from ZEIT/Christ &Welt and an Innsbruck-based meaning-of-life-researcher talk about a search for meaning that is also unusual and discuss it with the audience. An encounter.

The Case of Julian Assange: Hunted, Caught, Tortured

“I have never seen a group of democratic states come together to deliberately isolate, demonize and disrespect a single individual for such a long period of time,” writes Nils Melzer, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture. Journalist Julian Assange has become a symbol of freedom of speech. But if Britain and the United States have their way, the founder of Wikileaks should remain in prison for the rest of his life. Wikileaks, along with the New York Times, the Guardian and Der Spiegel, had published secret military logs in 2010 that proved U.S. war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq. Assange was pursued by U.S. authorities and arrested in 2019 by British police at Ecuador’s embassy in London, where he was living as a fugitive. In the fall of 2022, Guardian, Le Monde, and New York Times called on the U.S. government to stop prosecuting Assange.

"War and Peace". A diary

On February 24, 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine. In March of the same year, the taz Panter Foundation launched the diary project “War and Peace”. Sixteen authors from Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, Moldova and Kyrgyzstan reported regularly in the taz about their experiences of the war and approached each other in this way. At a workshop in Berlin, the participants were finally able to get to know each other. Some of the participating journalists talk about this project and how the war changed their lives.

Alpine Towns - Key to Sustainable Development in the Alps

The Alps are often seen primarily as a rural mountain region with countless valleys. Yet two thirds of the inhabitants of the Alpine region live in cities. The trend is rising: urban agglomerations are increasingly being formed, and there is a regional rural exodus.
Alpine cities, therefore, play a central role in sustainable development: economic prosperity and innovation, quality of life, efficient mobility structures or climate and environmental protection depend to a large extent on cities. This is shown by the current 9th Report on the State of the Alps of the International Alpine Convention with headquarters in Innsbruck.

Wie nachhaltig ist E- Mobilität wirklich?

“Sustainable e-mobility?” Combustion engine out – electric motor and batteries in. This is how Elon Musk and the automotive industry like to paint the future of the car. But the promise is not only unrealistic. It also encourages new overexploitation of nature. There is no alternative to a rapid switch to electromobility if global warming is to be at least slowed down. But equipping 2 billion cars worldwide with batteries weighing tons would lead to new ecological disasters. The greed for raw materials to increase battery production a hundredfold in just a few years is already causing environmental damage in many parts of the world. And it creates new dependencies. New technologies help. Riding a bicycle more often helps, too. But without a circular economy, responsible trade and alternative transport concepts, the promise of sustainable e-mobility remains a grand illusion.

Truth and Justice - The aftermath of the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The assassination has shaken Europe’s media landscape: Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered by a car bomb in October 2017 during her research into corruption and money laundering. Daphne Caruana was a member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists ICIJ, among other organizations. After her death, the family established a foundation in her memory. Daphne’s son Matthew, a Pulitzer Prize winner and investigative journalist himself, is working with friends to solve the crime. He is also campaigning against SLAPP lawsuits (strategic lawsuits against public participation), which are used against investigative journalists and human rights lawyers to silence them. His mother had to fight 46 such lawsuits, he says. Meanwhile, the EU Commission wants to take action against such abusive lawsuits.

Podcast and other media

On the train ride, while ironing, jogging, or even falling asleep: podcasts are almost everywhere and it’s hard to imagine our lives without them. Even though it is a comparatively young format, it is connected to traditional media in many ways. Two alumni of the “Master´s Programme Media” of the University of Innsbruck, today successful podcasters, will discuss this interplay. The panel is part of a current research seminar on the topic “Podcast: Radio 2.0?”. The students of the seminar have co-designed the panel.

The sixth mass fatality and no one is looking. Biodiversity and species extinction

Today, the climate crisis is the focus of public interest, while species extinction is hardly at all. Yet an active commitment to biodiversity would be an important component in an all-encompassing strategy to combat the climate crisis. It is not only elephants, gorillas and polar bears that are threatened; worldwide, around 150 species are becoming extinct every day. How can we communicate the consequences of species extinction even better to the public? What contribution can conventional media make – and what contribution can the entertainment industry make?

Bis zum letzten Tropfen

The Kaunertal power plant is to be expanded and subsequently extend across the entire Ötztal Alps. These interventions would irrevocably change Austria’s last remaining free-flowing glacial river, the Ötztaler Ache – and all this in the midst of a biodiversity crisis, species extinction and impending climate catastrophe. “Bis zum letzten Tropfen” tells the story of the last wild rivers and alpine natural spaces in Tyrol and of a movement that is trying to protect them.

Black and Female: Tsitsi Dangarembga in conversation

Tsitsi Dangarembga is one of the most important voices on the African continent as a multi-award-winning author, filmmaker and feminist essayist.

Her work is uncomfortable, illuminating and highly political. In her homeland Zimbabwe, she fights for democracy and freedom of expression; in the Western world, for a decolonized view of the African continent. Because of her artistic and social commitment, she was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 2021. In 2014 she was a Writer in Residence at the University of Innsbruck. “Black and Female” (“Schwarz und Frau,” Quadriga 2023) is the title of Dangarembga’s latest book. It collects “thoughts on postcolonial society”: essays on the exclusion and oppression of people of color. In particular, she analyzes the double repression to which black women are subjected by patriarchal structures and white dominance.

She Said

In October 2017, the revelations about Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assaults triggered widespread protests, and the #MeToo movement was born. Responsible for that was the research of investigative journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, who published several articles in the New York Times with the accounts of affected women. She Said impressively describes the challenges of investigative research, the enormous pressure on those affected, and the intimidation attempts by Weinstein’s lawyers.

Star of the Giro d'Italia and bicycle courier of the Resistenza
How sporting events change the world

Gino Bartali (1914 – 2000) is the most legendary Italian professional cyclist. And a “Righteous Among the Nations”. Bartali is remembered in the Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem. In 2018, the 1st stage of the 101st Giro d’Italia was held in Jerusalem in his honor. The multiple winner of the Giro and Tour de France, Bartali had smuggled passport photos and documents by bicycle between Genoa, Florence and Rome during fascism to provide Jews with a new identity. Bartali is remembered by Fabian Sommavilla in his book “33 Sportereignisse, die die Welt verändern” (33 sporting events that changed the world). Whether it’s the Black Power Fist at the 1968 Olympics or kneeling to protest racism, sports have always provided a political stage. Most recently, labor exploitation and discrimination against homosexuals were virulent at the World Cup in Qatar.

Right-wing extremist strategies - and how we can counteract

On the Internet, in anti-feminist movements, in the police: the extreme right can be found everywhere. To understand their tactics and take action against them, we need to know the different approaches and connections. That’s why we take a multi-layered look at the movement and its diverse strategies.

Climate journalism: Are we good enough?

Climate change affects us all, young and old, no matter where we live on Earth. Fridays For Future recognized and articulated the global dimension early on. The climate crisis is also a challenge for serious reporting. Networks for climate journalism have formed in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. There are climate departments and climate hubs in editorial departments of quality media and news agencies.
But is the coverage of the climate crisis good enough? Would it be necessary to provide 24/7 information about the tasks and questions that arise in the face of a historically first challenge for mankind?

The forbidden pleasure - mountain bike ride with trail talk

Cycling is generally prohibited in Austria’s forests. A seemingly banal topic that is eminently arguable. For years, the Tretlager column on www.derstandard.at has been devoted to conflicts on hiking and forest trails. Is this media excitement beneficial or does it rather prevent amicable solutions? On the contrary, do we need even more critical publicity to get things moving? Together with Lines Magazine, Tretlager writer Steffen Kanduth asks interested mountain bikers and local MTB clubs for a Trail Talk about the forbidden pleasure.

The meeting point is at the festival tents in Maria-Theresien-Straße. Those who want can reach the other locations by mountain bike or by train and on foot.

Italy after the shift to the right - Where does the country stand in Europe?

Italy’s right-wing government of Fratelli D’Italia, Lega and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is backing Italy First. One of its promises was to put Italian laws above European directives. Withdrawal from the EU, which Italy co-founded, is no longer being considered: Large grants are coming from Brussels. Patria e Famiglia, homeland and (heterosexual) family are ideological guidelines. The trivialization of fascism is now done by members of the government. Sea rescue for refugees coming across the Mediterranean is severely restricted for NGOs. Critical civil society is increasingly noticeable. In the ranking of freedom of the press (2022), Italy had already slipped significantly to 58th place before the change of power.

Redistribute for the climate

Both rich people and rich countries emit many times more CO2 than poor people. At the same time, the Global South is already the hardest hit by the climate crisis, and Western companies are often responsible for the exploitation of the soil and the fatal consequences. And even within Europe, those affected by poverty are already suffering the most. However, when talking about combating the climate crisis, social impacts are often used to problematize the costs of measures. Participants will discuss what a climate-social and climate-just policy could look like and what needs to change for this to happen.

"Inside Austria" - How the Sebastian Kurz case made podcast history...

Late summer 2021: rumors of imminent house searches are circulating. The editorial offices of Standard and Spiegel prepare for intensive research and enter into a partnership. A podcast is to reconstruct the “rise and fall of Sebastian Kurz”. And so, even as the turquoise era comes to an inglorious end, a series on the ex-chancellor’s career is created. The “making of” tells how “Inside Austria” came about, how it became a weekly joint research podcast by both media and what the work behind the scenes looks like.

Presentation

... and the "Ibiza" background at first hand

In May 2019, the Ibiza video costs FPÖ (Freedom Party of Austria) leader Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache his political career and blows up the Turquoise-Blue coalition. In the fall of 2021, the ensuing investigations end Sebastian Kurz’s chancellorship. “The Ibiza Affair” is now a book title, a series, and a coined term – and a gigantic coincidence. In this live recording of “Inside Austria,” Ibiza wire-puller Julian Hessenthaler reports on how many impossibilities preceded the video and how often the operation was almost discovered. We learn: The release of the video was on a knife’s edge.

Jackpot on the beach - Where cocaine falls from the sky
True Story Award 2020/21

“The man at the far end of Mexico doesn’t have Netflix. He just has to sit on his balcony to watch speedboat races, police chases and secret planes flying by,” writes Spanish reporter Jacobo García in his three-part feature “Caribe turbio” (The Turbid Waters of the Caribbean).
Cocaine ends up in the sea off the coast of Mexico. Trade winds ensure that the drug packages, which are not fished out of the water by smugglers or the police, wash up on the beach at Xcalak. There, greed poisons coexistence. Belize and Guatemala are also powerless against the cartels.
With this report, García won the main prize of the True Story Award 2020/21. A total of 1127 texts in over 20 languages were submitted for the first global journalism award.

Risky research - Current challenges for investigative journalism

For international investigative research, cooperation between journalists from several editorial offices, investigative platforms and research networks are becoming enormously important. Revelations such as the “Panama Papers” on gigantic money laundering deals by oligarchs, politicians and celebrities involved some 600 reporters from 117 countries.

The multi-award-winning journalist Luke Harding from the Guardian and Georg Mascolo, long-time head of the research network of Süddeutscher Zeitung, WDR, NDR, have worked on major investigative projects. And are still doing investigative work.

Harding, who was expelled from the country by the Kremlin as a Russia correspondent in 2011 and currently works mainly in Ukraine, has published on the Russian mafia state, Wikileaks and Edward Snowden, among others. His books have been translated into 30 languages.

Georg Mascolo, former editor-in-chief of Spiegel, has researched China’s foreign business dealings or US whistleblowers with the SZ/WDR/NDR research network and most recently published (with Katja Gloger) ” Innenansichten einer Pandemie – die Corona-Protokolle”.

The experienced investigative journalists talk to Alexandra Föderl-Schmid from the editorial department of the Süddeutsche Zeitung about the methods, challenges and risks of investigative work.
