Photographer and video journalist Helena Lea Manhartsberger operates on a global scale; but is based in Vienna. Before pursuing her study programme in Photo Journalism in Hannover and Aarhus, she studied International Development in Vienna and Photography in Yogyakarta.
In her work, she predominantly delves into topics like sexuality, identity, migration, armed conflicts and social movements. Intensive encounters with people with different backgrounds are the driving force for her motivation to reflect and shine a light on societal connections. She puts her focus on collaborative methods of photography and is involved with the association ipsum, where she leads projects in the areas of media literacy and stereotypical forms of representation in visual storytelling.
On top of her personal projects, she works for media outlets like German Der Spiegel, Stern, Die Zeit, and Austrian Der Standard. Her projects were part of international exhibitions on several accounts and she was bestowed with the Lumix Digital Storytelling Award, the Hellerau Portraits Award, the Advancement Award of the Raiffeisen State Bank of Tyrol “RLB Kunstbrücke Förderpreis” and the Gabriel Grüner Scholarship.
