Jacques Vagheni, 46, is a Congolese journalist. He heads the Collectif des Radios et Télévisions communautaires du Nord Kivu Coracon (Association of Community Radio and Television Stations of North Kivu Province) in the city of Goma. He is also the director of Radio Tayna, which is one of the most important media in Goma. Eastern Congo is a conflict zone for three decades. Vagheni tries to conter the violence with reliable information to encourage the population to live together peacefully. In cooperation with various aid organizations, the radio association provides information on health, family planning and crisis management. Vagheni is involved as a trainer for young journalists and fights for freedom of the press, which exists only on paper in Congo. Last year, the radio association that Vagheni leds received the Freedom of Expression Award from the Palm Foundation in Schorndorf, Germany. Vagheni is also secretary of the journalists’ association Union National de Presse du Congo for the province of North Kivu.
