Gabriele Riedle (born in Stuttgart) holds a degree in Literary Studies, is former culture editor of German daily newspaper taz, and worked as a reporter and editor for GEO for more than 15 years.
Since 1998, she has been publishing reports from all continents, including areas torn by war and crises like Afghanistan, Yemen, Haiti, Tibet, Darfur, Libya, Papua New Guinea, the Chechen Republic. For her work as a reporter, she was nominated for the Egon Erwin Kisch Prize time and time again. In 2017, she received the Bavarian TV Award for her documentary on women in Saudi Arabia. In 2018, she spent one year as a visiting lecturer at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where she taught the history of war reporting.
Four novels so far: In 1998, “Fluß” (River), published by Aufbau-Verlag, in collaboration with Viktor Jerofejew, in which texts from a Russian and a German author were merged for the first time to create one oeuvre. In 2004, “Versuch über das wüste Leben” (Essay on the Desolate Life), published by Die Andere Bibliothek, Hans Magnus Enzensberger (ed.). In 2012, “Überflüssige Menschen” (Superfluous People), published by Die Andere Bibliothek. In 2022, “In Dschungeln. In Wüsten. Im Krieg.” (In Jungles. In Deserts. In war zones), published by Die Andere Bibliothek. The novel on war reporters was nominated for the German Book Prize.
